About

SuperSats

SuperSats is an attendance and Lightning rewards system built through a collaboration between The Surfer Kids and Bitcoin Ekasi.

The system facilitates Lightning rewards through a structured, merit-based approach — where rewards are earned through proof-of-work in the form of attendance, participation, and performance. This makes SuperSats a powerful tool for encouraging commitment, with Bitcoin at its core and principles like proof-of-work, don’t trust verify, and equal opportunity embedded into every aspect of how it runs.

While SuperSats was built to power our surfing program, it can be adapted for any sport or structured youth program.

The Surfer Kids

The Surfer Kids is a registered non-profit organization founded in 2010. Fully donation-based, the organization is dedicated to youth empowerment in an impoverished South African township — utilizing surfing as the medium to teach life skills and commitment.

Bitcoin Ekasi

Bitcoin Ekasi is a Mossel Bay-based project with a mission to build a thriving Bitcoin circular economy within a South African township — modeled on, and inspired by, Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, El Salvador.

The Surfer Kids is one of the channels through which Bitcoin Ekasi operates. All staff salaries are paid entirely in Bitcoin, while township shops are simultaneously onboarded to accept Bitcoin as payment — allowing coaches to spend their earnings directly, without converting to ZAR.
